What I'm Digging
3 Kinals , 2 rigs, 1 foot switch
Here we have three differently equipped basses by
Canadian builder Mike Kinal.
The Lehle 3 @ 1 foot switch permits 3 basses to go into
the same amp.
This allows me to quickly switch between basses
so my ears do not forget where they have been.
A great tool for comparing basses.
I will start with all three basses in passive mode ,
volume on the bass at 8 , blend centered.
No EQ on the amp.
The Zebra bass has soapbars that can be switched
to single coils - we used the option to match the other
bass' pickups.
Let's hear what these basses can do without any EQ.
Let's call the three basses Burst White and Zebra
B , W , Z.
B - Quick attack with warmth , smooth and defined.
W - Most aggressive /nasty one in the bunch
Z - Thickest , as you might expect with all Barts
and an Alder body.
The rig
on the left , I just learned , is the same rig Jack
Casady currently uses.
Alessandro Basset Hound 30 watt tube head
Aguilar DB285JC Jack Casady Cab- 2x8 , 1x5
In the other corner , weighing in at slightly less
than 100 lbs, is the Glockenklang Bass Art Classic
400 watt transistor head , atop a custom Epifani
NYC 2x10 , probably from the late nineties.
Mr. Epifani made a few of these cabs as a more hi-fi
alternative to his original line of cabs , which STILL
kick butt.
If you want a great tone , and you wish to hear
every nuance you put into your playing , every detail ,
play thru a Glock.
Three Semis
A trio of semi acoustic gems.
Left to Right
JERZY DROZD SEQUEL V , 35" scale - note the rear bias of the pickups - a quick attack for sure.
KENNETH LAWRENCE CHAMBERBRASE II , 33" scale , tuned EADGC. Subime.
JERZY DROZD BARCELONA VI MIDI , 34" scale , tuned EADGBE - a
true bass "guitar".
R / B Mini Bass
OK, I have spoken with Ed Reynolds and received this information.
The body wings ARE indeed Koa - a light colored variety.
The bass was made in 1980.
The "B" in the R/B is none
other than Bill Bartolini - it turns out that BIll wanted a bass for
himself to play, something easy to transport.
Cool - a little bit of Bass History here.
