A Night at the Opera or A Day in Detroit ? I chose Detroit A Sunday in DetroitLast minute I decided to head out to Detroit for Gordy's annual Spring Guitar Show. What a great crowd ! I was busy all day renewing old friendships and meeting some new players as well. Check it out.
This player was surprised to find a Kinal Kompact bass at the show.I was surprised to learn that he had played one before.
Local Detroit Guitarist / bassist Kevin Breslin - one day , Kevin , you WILL own a Drozd !
Michigan-based builder David Opatik brought a bass he made - kind of like if Fender and Rickenbacker had an illegitimate child. Nice bass.
Bassist Builder Sean May was good enough to drop buy and bring one of his creations. Nice guy, great player , and a talented builder all wrapped up in one
One of the Motown Regulars giving the Marleaux M Bass a workout.
Gary Davis spanks a Ristola 5.
Emerson on a Sukop semi-hollow 5. Hey , anyone seen Geno ?.
Sylvester tearing it up on a particularly speedy Marleaux JB4. What I’m Digging Well, I am in a fretless state of mind once again.Let me state that I do not know how to play guitar - I started on sax and then switched to bass many moons ago. But a fretless guitar ? Now you have my attention. This is a Godin nylon string fretless with MIDI. > What a gas to play !! Caution - be very careful with those attempts to play chords ! The other featured instrument is the Marleuax Fretless Edition 5. This bass makes fretless painless for the player and the listener. What do you prefer ? A beautiful unmarked fretboard played out of tune, or a lined fretboard played in tune ? For me, it's what I hear that counts most. Hey , Jaco and Gary Willis both use this crutch to great effect. No shame with lines is what I say.
"TBYB" Hey, looks do count , but they are third in my list of tone, playability, and then looks as factors to consider when evaluating a bass. When you see a new bass on the LAG site, it is quite likely a brand you have not played. Your interest may have been inspired merely by the pics you see. Web photos tell you almost NOTHING about that bass. Our TBYB program exists primarily for that reason - you can audition the basses you see on our site, most likely basses you cannot find in your area. Step up, step out, and take a chance. With TBYB you have no risk of being dissatisfied with your choice GENTLE GIANT ? Who among us knows of this '70's prog rock band ?They were among my favorites when I was first taking up bass , and their music from back then is still valid today. Well, I know of a band that is doing their material. www.GendesGiant.com IF you dig Giant, check out these guys. TBYB A little about me and LAG About the Vault About our Host |
