4 String Basses

Steinberger Q4 ( C )
This is a real deal USA Steinberger , not a foreign made licensed copy.
It is in very nice shape and plays wonderfully.
All original , with a D-tuner equipped bridge.
Comes with the original gig bag.
Price: $1,250

Aria Pro II SB-700 ( C )
Thru the mid-late '70's and into the '80's , some major US brands were in a real 'down' era.
Quality suffered, and some Japanese makers stepped up their game to fill in this void.
Matsumoko was one of these makers.
They made instruments for many companies, one of which was Aria.
Astute observers at the time took note that the quality offered by Matsumoko was as good as or better
than that offered by the more well known US companies.
Everyone needs a kick in the pants sometime , a wake up call.
This example was made in 1982.
>  34" scale Maple and Walnut neck
>  Ebony fretboard
>  Ash body
>  Simple layout - volume, tone, series / parallel switch
This bass is in very nice shape , especially considering it's age.
Price: $950

Bill Moll Express 18” Archtop Bass Guitar
It is a privilege to be able to experience and offer such a wonderful and unique bass. Let me begin by stating that for the past several years Bill Moll had made a name for himself in the world of high end Archtop Jazz Guitars. This bass incorporates and translates that experience into the world of bass. This bass is a full 18” across the lower bout, and a full 5” deep. Acoustically, this bass is “there”. ( It is rare to be able to say this about an acoustic bass guitar. ) Building upon the fine acoustic tone, Bill has added a pickguard mounted floating pickup plus a piezo pickup built into the bridge. With a mono jack cable out, you get the magnetic signal only – use a stereo cable and you get both the magnetic and piezo pickups combined. The tone is big and woody. The bass is dynamic and responsive to the touch. It is alive.

This bass is made with ALL solid wood construction. The top , back, and sides are Flamed Maple. The top is carved Spruce. The bound fingerboard , tailpiece , and pickguard are all Ebony. The neck is 34” scale, 24 frets and made of Flame Maple.

Price: $6,850

Rob Allen Custom 4 Fretted (consignment )
This is a one-off made by Rob a few years ago.Not your typical RA.It is a 32" scale fretted bass , Mahaogany body and neck , with a stunning Koa top.The fretboard , pickup surround , bridge, and internal tone block are all Brazilian Rosewood. This bass has a single magnetic pickup , no piezo, and no tone or volume controls.Minimal - an RA for AJ, perhaps ?This bass is in very nice shape, does have several small dings and scratches, none of which affect the playability or tone.Right now the bass is strung with Flats , which sound great and impart a righteous acoustic vibe.Rob tells me this bass , back when it was made, was right around $5K.At this time it would be more $, IF he would consent to make another.
( he is quite busy filling orders with his current lineup of basses ).With a very nicely padded gig bag, this bass is.
Price: $3,250  Now $2,150

5 String Basses

Leduc PAD 5 ( C )
This is the second such bass we have had in the last year.
I fell for the first one - this one is even nicer !
PAD stands for Padauk , which is the only wood species you will find on this bass.
This bass has a big voice, rich and resonant.
While I generally do not choose EMG pickups, they sound great in this bass.
The preamp is a 2 band.
The scale length is 33.875".
Plays very easily, the low B is strong.
Comes with the original Leduc gig bag
Price: $2,150

Alfonso Iturra 5 ( C )
Here is a bass from south of the equator - Chile , to be exact.
It's not often that you run across a 3 pickup bass - I remember some Teisco's from the '60's that had 3-4 pickups and 1-2 tones.
I assure you, this is not the case with this bass.
It IS possible to attain some very subtle tonal variations by mixing the volume controls for each of the three pickups.
The last three controls are for the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp.
The two toggles are for mid frequency selection and active/  passive modes.
The 34" scale neck sports a flatsawn Wenge fretboard.
The body is Ash.
This bass is very near mint, plays and sounds great.
It is supplied with a nicely padded gig bag.
Price: $2,150

Ristola Instruments 5
Another new 5er from Brian Ristola. This one features a Mahogany body with a figured Myrtle top The 35" scale neck is Maple and Purpleheart, with an acrylicized Macassar Ebony fretboard.Pickups are Nordstrand Dual Coils, and the preamp is a 4 band by Audere , with the optional "Z" switch and active/passive switch. Hardware by Hipshot.

I am really impressed by the playability of these basses , right out of the box they feel and sound great. With the Protec Contigo mgig bag, this bass is

Adamovic Jupiter 5
Back home is this now lightly used beauty from Nikola Adamovic of the Netherlands.
Mr. Adamovic is a very talented builder who deserves wider recognition.

Check out that Goncalo Alves top and figured Soloman Padouk top !
The 35" scale neck also contains Soloman Padouk as well as African Padouk and Wenge.
The fingerboard is Ebony, as are the control knobs , pickup covers , and truss rod cover.
The pickups are Bassbars , the preamp is a 3 band by Noll.
All hardware by Hipshot.
This bass shows no sign of use, and it is priced about $1,400 less than a comparable new order.
With a nicely padded gig bag, this bass is

Jerzy Drozd Mastery V
The Mastery is a neck-thru variation of Jerzy's Obsession line.
The all white paint is unique among Jerzy's hundreds of basses.
There is a depth to the paint, a luminesence drawn out by light.
So , you ask, what is beneath the paint ?

> Etimoe body wings
> Maple top
> 35" scale 5 piece Maple / Wenge
> Ebony fretboard
> Proprietary JeDXS noisefree split single coil pickups
> Aguilar OBP-3 preamp

> Ultralight hardshell case

I have a set of all black control knobs on order to complete the all black / white theme.

Jerzy Drozd Excellency V
Here is one of the basses we recently received from Jerzy.
His most popular model, the Excellency is a deep-set bolt-on design bass that
combines the sustain of a neck-thru and the snap of a bolt-on.

Some details :
Body - Etimoe
Top - Burl Black Poplar
Neck - 35" Maple / Wenge with Ebony fingerboard
Pickups - Jerzy's own JeDXS Split Singles
Preamp - Aguilar OBP-3 with mid frequency select switch , active / passive switch and full time passive tone control.
Bridge - Jerzy;s own design, made by Jerzy
Tuners - Gotoh

Jerzy is one of maybe 5 - 8  builders I believe are at the top of their field.
( No, I do not have a ranked 1-8 list )

A remarkable bass.

Kenneth Lawrence Instruments CBII 5/33
Not surprisingly, this bass has floored me. ( They always do )
It is easy for me to be accustomed to having great basses within easy reach - yes, I am spoiled.
I find that I sometimes I take these builders' skills for granted , and sometimes I need to be........
more objective.
I am a lucky guy, and very fortunate to work with the builders I do.

About this bass.....

> Chambered Claro Walnut body
> Figured Myrtle top and headcap
> Eastern Maple 3 piece 33" scale neck with dual function stainless steel truss rod
> 85 years old Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with "blind" binding
> Matching Brazilian Rosewood heel plate, control cavity cover and truss rod cover.
> Matching Ramp - easily removable
> Nordstrand hum-cancelling "J" pickups in matching Brazilian Rosewood covers
> Mike Pope Custom 4 band preamp
> Oil and wax finish
> Hipshot hardware
> Dunlop dual function straplocks
> Estrella heavily padded gig bag

Another "problem" with having access to great basses is that I know and appreciate how good they
really are - IF I tell the truth, it sounds like hype.
I'd much prefer that I say nothing and let the players tell me.

Right now this bass is strung up with a high C - what a fun bass , hard to put this baby down.
( sounds wonderful with the low B, as well )

NOTE to Matthew Garrison and Dominique Di Piazza - lookout, OR come and get it.This bass is available as a sample bass - play one of these and you may seriously consider owning one. As equipped here, this bass is $8,850

Jerzy Drozd Barcelona V FL MIDI ( N )
Show and tell, PT 2. I highly recommend this bass.
Here is a wonderful new bass from the fertile mind and skilled hands of one of my favorite builders , Jerzy Drozd.
This is not your typical fretless bass.
There are two magnetic pickups , a single coil near the bridge, a dual coil in the neck position.
Due to the positioning of these two pickups and the fact that one is a single, the other a dual, there are
many nuanced tones to be explored via the magnetic pickup blend control and passive tone control.

The RMC piezo bridge pickups give yet another acoustic slant to this bass.
And, you can combine the magnetic / piezo via another blend control.

Then there is MIDI via the RMC pickups and PolyDrive.
Possibilities abound.

IF you are looking to get a Jaco tone, this is probably not the bass for you.
Yes, the bridge mag is a single coil in just about the right spot to emulate a JB, but this bass' voice
is much more acoustic than electric.
You CAN get that quick attack bridge response, but with an un-JB voice.

Watson SC 5/ 35
This demo is like new and something of a sleeper in the bass world.
There are not many Watson basses out their right now - Alex has not been building full time for all that long a time.
Therefore, most of you reading this have never played one of these basses.

Take it from me, the build quality does not get any better.
The "wood formula" for the body is maybe my all-time favorite - Koa over Mahogany.
The electronics are world class , with Alex' own pickups and a Mike Pope custom 4 band preamp.
Hipshot hardware.
Is there any weak link to be found ?
That is a rhetorical question.
Supplied with a Protec Contigo gig bag.
Take a chance , treat yourself.

Price: $3,850

Citron "Red Swallow" (N)
If you are reading this, I sincerely hope you are not thinking this bass is named after a bird.
Maybe a bird, if you mean Charlie Parker and bebop lines.
Like, I'm talking about Steve Swallow , one of my all-time favorites , as a player and as a composer.
Seriously deep - check him out.
Dig ?

Anyway, if you want to play and sound just like him , all you need is this bass. *
This bass comes with a gig bag,

* This is not true.

Price: $5,100

Watson SC 5/34
This is one slick and serious fretless bass.
I don't know what you think, but I have found that I prefer my fretless to be 34" scale or less - the thunderous low B
is not necessary , especially when all 5 strings are as "even" as they are on this particular bass.

> Mahogany body core
> Koa top and back
> Multi-lam Wenge and Orange Osage neck
> Macassar Ebony fingerboard
> Macassar Ebony pickup covers
> Nordstrand pickups
> Glockenklang 3 band preamp
> Hipshot tuners and bridge

This bass is supplied with a Protect Contigo gig bag, a very nice bag indeed.

Price: $3,250

Marleaux Fretless Edition 5 ( N )
Gerald Marleaux started building basses over 20 years ago , now with well over 1,000 of his basses
out in the filed making well over 1,000 players very happy.
World-class build quality and materials.

This is the Fretless Editon, made with woods especially chosen for a distinct fretless voice - warm , clear and well-balanced.
Mahogany body, Pearwood top , Ebony fretboard.

The 34" neck plays effortlessly, the low B strong and even ,  a real joy to play.
The fretlines, while theoretically not cool, make me sound and play better.
Another tool to be used for a good purpose.

Price: $3,750

Marleaux MBass 5
There is something very comfortable and inviting about a 34" scale 5 string bass that "works"
in every way :
Playability
Ergonomic fit
A great inherent "pre-EQ" voice supplemented by a very flexible EQ.
Superior build quality
Looks count, too
Think Porsche Bass.

The 3 piece Maple neck has a Maple fretboard.
The Ash body is topped by a highly figured slab of Olive Ash , with a matching headstock veneer.
Delano pickups and Marleaux custom 2 band pre with passive tone control.
Take advantage of the currently weak Euro and this special price.

Price: $3,350

MTD 535 / 24 FL ( U )
Here is yet another exceptional fretless 5. The neck on this bass feels slimmer than what I recall of other 535s I have played.
I might be mistaken ( for you, Brad - drop a line ! )

This bass sings sweet , well defined with some nice mid range - thank you Mr. Mahogany.
The fretboard is Honduras Rosewood , which , I have been told , is THE type of Rosewood to use for a fretless board.
What I have been told and what I hear seem to agree.
This bass is in very nice shape, near mint in fact.
Supplied with an MTD ultralight hardshell case.

Price: $3,350

Surine Quest 5 ( C )
Here we have a somewhat rare custom bass , a Surine that was built in 2003.
It is in great shape and plays very well.
The neck is deeper than average ( chunky ? ) , but my small - medium sized mitts have no problem.
I find that the playability of a neck often trumps size , except in extreme cases.

> Mahogany Core
> Rosewood top and back
> 35" scale Flamed Maple and Purpleheart neck
> Macassar Ebony fretboard with 31 fret extension
> Dual truss rods
> All Bartolini electronics with 3 band EQ and active / passive switch
> Non-original hardshell case

Scott Surine tells me that this bass was a custom order, with the body wings made narrower than those found on the standard Quest design.
This bass set the precedent for the newer Quest NTVII design.

A new Surine ordered to replicate this bass would list for $6,295.
This example can be yours for

Wyn Guitars 5 ( C )   SOLD
Here we have a practically new ( June 2010 ! ) bass by "new" builder Randall Wyn Fullmer

If you look at the Wyn site, you will read that while these basses are new to the bass community,
years of building experience preceded these basses hitting the market.
Suffice it to say that I am truly impressed by the workmanship, playability and sound of this bass.
Here are the specs

>  34" scale Maple / Wenge neck
>  Macassar Ebony fretboard
>  Mahaogany body core
>  Figured Bubinga top and back
>  Wenge " tone plate "
>  Wenge rear neck laminate
>  Nordstrand Fat Stack pickups
>  Aguilar OBP-3 preamp
>  Hipshot hardware

Spector Legend 5 Custom Mike Kroeger Signature
Now there's a classy name for a bass.
My parents used buy groceries at Kroeger's back in the day - same guy ,
you think ?
This is a brand new and unique 5 from our friends at Spector.
The Mike Kroeger Nickleback bass' most obvious feature is the look - flat black - kinda futuristic ? Please don't say "Goth".
Though it may appear to be a neck-thru bass , it is actually a set-neck design.Among the higher end basses I have seen , both the set-neck and deep-pocket bolt-on design can be used well to give a bass great sustain AND a snap attack , attributes often at odds with some bolt-on and neck-thru basses.
The 35" scale neck is 3 piece Rock Maple with graphite bars , a 24 fret Rosewood fingerboard.

SpectorCore FL 5 / 1
This 5 we will call # 1 , because I bought 2 of these 5s at the same time. I also got a 4.
When I buy 3 of any bass , that is a good sign.
Yes, I think these basses are a great bargain basement way of getting into the fretless bass.
Invest a little $ , some serious practice time, and you are on your way.
The fretlines definitely help to give a jump start to playing live , and there is NO shame with lines.
There IS shame with crappy intonation..............Don't get me going.......

Magnetic and piezo pickups lend versatility.
A light and well balanced bass.

KInal MK5-21
Old school vibe here - this passive bass features a pair of sweet and strong Lindy Fralin singlecoils.
Vol / Vol / Tone - KISS
Nothing wrong with a "simple" bass , it's what you do with it , right ?
The Alder body is topped by Flamed Myrtle.
The 34" scale one piece Maple neck sports a Maple fretboard , with headstock veneers front and rear.
I like the black / chrome hardware theme and the black top dots. Subdued elegance.
The trans black gloss finish is difficult to photograph accurately.
My poor pictures do not do the bass justice.
Supplied with a hardshell case.
Price: $2,550

Kinal Kompact 5
This time we'll try a Kompact 5 stringer , tuned EADGC.
30" scale neck , 5 piece Mahogany , with a figured Rosewood fretboard.
The body is Mahogany and the top is Spruce.
Check out the headstock laminates front and rear ( Cocobolo ? )
Pickup and preamp are by B Band.
7 lbs, 1 oz.
This bass works , the EADGC tuning is a gas.
Supplied with the OHSC.
Price: $1,750

KR Guitars Ursa Major
New from bass builder Kevin Robertson , the Ursa Major.
The design is unique yet very ergonomically comfortable.
It is not easy coming up with a design that works and is not a rip of
another builders' design , but
Kevin has achieved just that,
Note the mild fanned fret treatment , with the low B having a 35"
scale with the top string at 34".
When playing the bass, this is not even noticeable to the fretting hand.

The top and back are Quilted Bubinga - check out the color , movement
and depth of this wood.
A similarly figured piece of Quilted Maple is used as the rear center
block.
The neck is Maple and Wenge, the fretbord is Macassar Ebony.
Pickups and preamp are by Bartolini , volume, blend , 3 band EQ with
active passive option.

This bass is supplied with an ultralight hardshell case.
Price: $3,500  Now $2,350

Spector NS-5H2 EX
Stuart Spector has been around for a long time, and it's not because of his good looks.
( Same goes for me, unfortunately ) No, Mr Spector is one of the original bass builders from back when there were few builders doing high end basses. Think Alembic , Veillette - Citron , Ken Smith , and who am I forgetting ?

What makes this special is the optional Rosewood neck and an ingeniously versatile application of the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. THE WOODS
The body is a light colored , flamey 2 pieces of Mahogany and the top is Spalted Maple.
The neck is a three piece Rosewood work of art and the fretboard is a separate piece of rich Rosewood.
This neck is very quick and comfy.
THE PREAMP
This bass has two volume knobs ( no blend ), each can be pulled to switch the EMG CS-TW pickups from dual to single coil operation. Bass and Treble are stacked.
The MID EQ knob also can be pulled up to switch the mid frequency from 400Hz to 800Hz. This bass is fresh from the Spector workshop.

Aries Conis II
If you know me, you probably know of my particular interest in
acoustic / electric basses, especially fretless basses of that ilk. This
bass has me worked up. Where do I start ? Well, the single magnetic
pickup is perfectly located for my poor Jaco imitation - the tone is there, now I need to find some chops and musical ideas.
The piezo bridge pickup ( Schertler Bluestick ) gives a great wooly
and woody tone.
Of course, the two pickups can be combined to find the flavor you seek.
The bass can go active or passive , and has a separate passive tone
control.
The other controls are volume, blend and 3 band EQ.
The preamp is also Aries' own design.

The body is Honduras Mahogany in a high gloss antique violin finish. In
the tradition of fine acoustic instruments , the top is Spruce -
a great choice , in my opinion.
The 35" scale neck is 5 piece, primarily Maple , with a Macassar.
Ebony fretboard. The bridge is also Macassar Ebony.
Note the Maple binding - pure class.

Aries Senes VS
From Croatia come the basses of Arijan Sabic.
I first encountered Aries basses a few years ago when Joey G had them.
at the NAMM show.
Joey G - remember him ?
Anyway, back then, I thought the Aries basses I saw were very nice ,
but at NAMM it is very difficult ( at least for me ) to know how truly good a bass is.
Now that these two basses have been here for a couple of weeks and I
have been able to play them thru the Glockenklang reference rig, I can
tell you that these basses are even better than I recall - I
think you will agree when you get your hands on one.
Let's work on making that happen.

6 String Basses

Yamaha John Patitucci 6
Here we have a fairly hard to find bass , especially in this Slate Gray / Trans Black tint.
This bass has a 34 scale neck that has full 19mm spacing at the bridge.
The body core appears to be Ash, with Flamed Maple top and back.
The Maple neck sports an Ebony fretboard with cool inlay markers.
A big sounding , versatile bass.

About the numerous little dings ?
The story, as I heard it, was that a bassist from south of the Mason-Dixon line got a last minute call to sub for a buddy.
By way of a serious miscommunication , this player took his JP to what turned out to be a C&W gig , at a less than classy venue.
The player came for a jazz gig , and after a set and a half of restrained and correct-for-the-music stuff he was playing , this fellow had to let lose and take a solo.
Thank God for this bass - twice ( front and rear ) this bass shielded our buddy from buckshot.
He assures that there were no more bass solos that gig.

Fleishman 6 FL ( Consignment )
Just in, with more info to come , a bass from back when there were very few custom builders out there.
Think Alembic , ..............................

And who else ?

Harry Fleishman has been around about as long as dirt and he is still plying is craft with both acoustic and electric instruments.
This bass is approximately 25-30 years old - vintage custom ?

The neck is Maple ,with a double thick slice of Ebony for a fingerboard.
Hey, is this a fanned fret fretless - the low B is 35" , the hugh C 34"
Check out the nut.

To the best of my knowledge, the electronics and hardware are all by Harry.
There was not much of an after market option back then.

Jerzy Drozd Barcelona VI MIDI ( N )
This bass has rocked me pretty hard , and it was a long time coming.
I have posted this bass here as a "show and tell" bass - check it out.

>  34" scale 5 piece Maple and Wenge neck
>  17mm spacing at the bridge
>  Ebony fretboard with Jerzy's "Ray of Light" inlay , done in Maple.
>  Solid Cedar top and body
>  Two of Jerzy's own magnetic pickups - a single split coil JeDXS at the bridge , a true dual coil JeDXD at the neck
>  RMC piezo pickups in the bridge
>  RMC PolyDrive MIDI implimentation
>  The bass is supplied with the optional Macacssar Ebony pickguard
>  Heavy Duty "Harvest" gig bag

The Barcelona is a bass totally unique in my 30+ years of bassdom.
I describe the sound as dry and precise , a very imprecise description , I know.
The response to touch and nuance is something more along the lines of a classical guitar.
I love this instrument tuned as it now is , EADGBE , like a guitar ( an octave lower ).
Roll off the high and do some Wes stuff on bass.
Finger style bliss.

The Barcelona is not what I would think of as a slap bass , but if you listen to Carles Benavent , he treats the Barcelona like a flamenco bass.
So, what do I know ?

There have been three other Barcelonas here in the last couple of years, two of them fretted 6s like this one.
The first two were sold in the name of commerce , against my wish to keep one for myself.
Well, I'm getting older, I see friends passing, our time is finite.
This bass is staying put -  I am in love.
It is here for audition, to create new orders.

This  very well-equipped example is right  around $8k , based on the currently weak Euro ( It's a great time to buy Euro gear !! ).
IF you do not care for MIDI , the inlay , RMC piezo , body tint and gold hardware , the price is more like $5K.

Kenneth Lawrence Instruments ChamberBrase II 6 / 33
How rare is it to have two new basses from Ken here at the same time ?
He makes about 25 instruments a year with a good # being guitars , so you do the math.
Ken has made the 33" scale work for the low B - I have been playing one for a year and it has become my go-to fretted 6.
IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER

Mensfeld 6 / 32”
I'll bet you have not seen one of these before, unless you saw the 5 we had about a year ago.
This bass is by Polish luthier Maciej Mensfeld.
It is a 32" scale bass whose claim to fame is a very robust low B string.
It used to be that we assumed that a 35" scale was necessary to provide a strong B.
I am here to tell you that there are exceptions to almost every rule , and this bass is one example of that.

Mr. Mensfeld did not tell me what all the woods are , and I cannot say that this bass sounds a certain way due to any of the woods used here.
My ears tell me the story - the bass has a rich and articulate tone.
Adding to the mongrel nature of this bass are the electronics - pickups are MEC , the preamp is a Lakland / Bartolini.

Bottom line, it sounds great , it is a breeze to play.
